It's forecast for 42° in Perth this Sunday. WTH Mother Nature!?

What does one do in 42° weather? Start packing their bags for the arctic most likely.

Currently I'm fighting battle after battle about bedtime with my almost two year old. He has moved to a big bed and after a few bouts of sickness I had let him get into some bad habits. Stern mummy is here to stay now though. Basically that just means all day (and night) I say NO, STOP, WATCH YOUR FINGERS, NO YOU CAN'T HAVE MUMMY'S IPAD, then he sleeps and repeat until bedtime.

Sorry for the shocking quality, I had to ninja it in and outta there!

This week with a friend I went out for brunch to The Greenhouse and I had their crab & avocado, chives.

It's all piled onto a big piece of sourdough bread.

So tasty, light and satisfying. Can't recommend it highly enough. Look forward to going back. It's one of those hipster places where they pour your water out of a watering can and you can write on the walls in the toilets. Some info on their concept if you're interested.*

Another thing I've also been enjoying lately is writing and receiving letters and postcards. A dying art that I hope doesn't become extinct. I will save it for another post because I have a lot to talk about!

I will leave you with this gem, I have found it very helpful when I feel an impulse buy coming on. It's better to wait, we all know it. Not easier, but better.

After a day of temperatures in the mid 30's, it was decided that a nice light heavy dish was need to round off the day.

Enter stage left Carbonara!

Now, this was my first time making this and we added and subtracted a few things.

Mix up two egg yolks, two whole eggs, cream and grated cheese.

Fry up an army load of bacon and mushrooms*

Cook up some pasta

Once pasta is cooked, drain it and add the cream and egg concoction, while on a very low heat. Add the bacon and mushrooms.

Stir it all up, making sure not to leave it on the heat too long or you'll get scrambled eggs. Add some pepper and cheese and call it a night because you're soon to be in a food coma.

Recipe from the Junior Masterchef Australia Cookbook.

Serves 4

2 eggs
2 egg yolks
125ml of pouring cream
40g finely grated Parmesan
1tbs olive oil
250g bacon
500g spaghetti

1. Crack the whole eggs into a large jug. Add the egg yolks, cream and grated cheese. Season with freshly ground pepper, then whisk.

2. Heat olive oil in a pan, add bacon, cook for 2 minutes without stirring. Stir then cook for 4 minutes or until the bacon is crisp. Drain on paper towel. (At this point I added mushrooms)

3. Cook spaghetti as per packet or taste

4. Tip spaghetti back into the warm saucepan and add bacon (and mushrooms) cook for one minute stirring continuously, then add the egg mixture and immediately stir the pasta so that it's well coated in the sauce. Keep stirring for one minute then remove pan from the heat. Continue stirring for 3 minutes, divide among bowls and sprinkle with Parmesan.

Hello 2013

Hi All,

After a 6 month hiatus I'm back! And my blog has had a little makeover thanks to Amy from Mrs Smyth Gets A Life, she did a fabulous job and I'm extremely happy with it!

I do apologise for not getting back on the wagon sooner. Sometimes life can get in the way of a tinsy little blog you enjoy writing and 3 people (thanks) enjoy reading.

Is anyone doing New Years resolutions? I keeping swapping between doing them and not! Mainly I want to relax and not put so much pressure on myself to have everything perfect all the time. It's tough. I'm trying.

Sunday and Sunday # 6

After another hectic week, I decided to bringing back SBS (Sunday Baking Sunday).

A slightly unwell Naz watched while I made these and ate a chocolate ripple biscuit. His first ever! No photos of this but I'm sure you can imagine a small boy with chocolate biscuit all over him.

When I baked these for 10 minutes they were very soft even after cooling, so I popped them back in for about 5 more minutes.

Sunday Baking Sunday

This week I made:

Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cookies

Room temp butter

Crunchy peanut butter

Added sugar

White sugar

Wizz it up


Add flour, baking soda, bicarb and chocolate chips

Put onto baking tray


White chocolate & peanut butter cookies

- recipe from the August Australian Good Food Magazine

Makes: 10
Prep: 10mins
Cook: 10 mins

*I doubled the recipe and made a few changes which I will explain as we go*

100g unsalted butter, softened
1/3 c crunchy peanut butter
1/4 c Demerara sugar (I users raw sugar)
1 egg, at room temp
2/3 c plain flour
1/2 tsp bicarb soda
1/2 tap baking powder
50g white chocolate, chopped (I used milk chocolate chips)

1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper

2. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, peanut butter and sugars in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat until just combined. Fold in flour, baking powder, bicarb and chocolate until combined

3. Using an ice cream scoop, place 10 scoops of cookie dough onto prepared tray, about 3cm apart. Bake for 10 mins (I baked them for at least 15mins) until just firm to touch. Remove from oven. Cool on trays. Serve.

I also made Zucchini and Carrot muffins for Naz

Shower "Vicks"

After seeing these on Pinterest a while ago, I assume during the American winter months I decided to make them!

Naz and I are both sick, I won't go into details but it can be pretty gross. We need something to clear our sinuses and we always shower together so it's win win!
Here's the *pin* where I originally saw it.
Basically it's a tablet that dissolves on the shower floor emanating a wonderful smelling steam. It turns a steamy shower into a steamy nose clearing shower.

2 c Bicarb Soda
Eucalyptus and lavender oil

Bicarb into bowl, break up the lumps with a little whisk.

Slowly add water. I added WAY too much and had to add more bicarb.

Until its a paste

I didn't have fancy essential oils, I have these that I mix with vinegar and water to clean with. I added 3 capfuls of each

Poured them into a muffin pan and you leave them to set overnight.
I'll let you all know how they set and how long they last in the shower!
The next morning:

I'll use one tonight, can't wait!

The Verdict:

They are really great, next time I'll use "proper" essential oils or more of the ones I have, but I found them to be very good for clearing both our noses. I also used them to make me feel more awake in the mornings.

Sunday Hot Pot

After many weeks of not writing in here, I've found some inspiration.


Winter makes me want to cook up big steamy pots of hearty food.

Looking through the August edition of Australian Good Food I found this:

Sausage, sun-dried tomato & bean hotpot. (recipe at bottom of post)

It ticked all the right boxes!

So I gathered my ingredients and off I went.

Started by browning up some lamb sausages

Sliced a leek and chopped up some garlic

Drained and rinsed some butter beans

Chopped up a chilli and some sun-dried tomato.

After the sausages browned I took them out, put the garlic and leek in. Then added wine and chicken stock

Added chilli

And lastly popped the sausages back in with the sun-dried tomatoes.

It's now all bagged up in the freezer but let me assure you it's delicious!

1 tbsp olive oil
6 Italian style lamb sausages
1 leek, pale section only thinly sliced
2 garlic cloves crushed (I used 4)
1 c dry white wine
1 c salt reduced chicken stock
Pinch of chilli flakes (I used a whole red chilli)
2 x 400g cans of butter beans rinsed and drained
1/3 c drained chopped sun dried tomatoes
1/4 c flat leaf parsley (didn't use)

1. Heat oil in a large heavy based saucepan on medium. Cook sausages, turning occasionally, for 4-5 minutes, until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Cover with foil and rest for 5 mins. Thinly slice.

2. Add leek to same pan and cool stirring occasionally for 3-4 mins until softened. Add garlic and cook, stirring, for 30 secs, until fragrant. Stir in wine, stock and chilli flakes and bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered for 5 mins, until reduced slightly.

3. Stir in sausage and beans and cook, stirring occasionally for 5 mins until heated through. Season. Stir in tomato and parsley and serve.

Medically Unfit

As I was medically unfit to work today, I decided to take the day by the horns and reeeeelaaaaaax.

Well try to anyway.

As we all know I love Grocery shopping . I totally zenned out in Coles.

Oh I was sans baby by the way.

So I take my time up and down the aisles looking at things, reading packets and sometimes making a second (or third) trip down particular aisles. Did you know you can buy already roasted pine nuts?? That'd save me from burning the bum of a heap of pine nuts!

I looked around the shops without having to worry about feeding anyone or getting anyone to bed or whether anyone was going to lose their beep at any given moment.

And now I'm lying on my lounge relaxing the hell out of it.

Henna Alert

I have been a fan of Lush for many years an have always been intrigued by their henna hair dye.
• I knew it would be messy
• I knew it would be permanent and to get it out, you have to cut your hair off
• I knew it was like a big blob of mud on your head for a few hours.
So I tried to convince my sister Jade to try it on her practically virgin hair.
Jade bought some agessss ago and last weekend we decided to DO IT!
Jade was house sitting a house with white carpet and a white couch. NOT ideal.
Henna stains EVERYTHING in its path.
Plus she'd just got out of bed so was in a slightly stroppy mood. But onwards we pushed.
Here is Jade Before:

Very dull and lifeless hair. :P
You'll need:
• gloves
• a glass bowl (henna stains plastic)
• Vaseline to go around the hairline
• a hair dye brush
• 1,000 dark towels
• patience

First chop up your henna so it'll melt easier
At the point you're meant to let the henna soak in water for 10 minutes to help it soften. We didn't.

Make a Bain marie with a pot of simmering water and a glass bowl on top. Throw in your henna, slowly add some water.
It will start to melt and look like this:

At this point you're thinking 'hmm do I really want to do this'
Keep going!

And you'll end up with this. It will be the consistency of mud, not double cream. Mud.
Put some Vaseline around your hairline and wack it on! Put it in warm but not hot.

Here's Jade once we were finished.

With no shower cap in sight I put a shopping bag on her head to try stop the henna falling off and getting on everything.
Then, Jade left it in her hair for 2.5 hours and washed it 374 times to get it all out.
And we were left with this:

The colour didn't change much, but her hair was very soft and shiny. She should've left it on longer we decided.
Jades Verdict: not worth it.
